Nik’s Music Almanac

Totally Irrelevant and Off-Topic

Your Friend

Whenever I get homesick, I can just watch the video for Tame One and I feel a little better.

Taryn has an amazing voice, and the music on her first EP is subtle, interesting, and sometimes haunting. Her full length 2016 album is very good but a slightly more EDM approach where the first was more pure vocals. Still very well done.

I don’t know who else likes this music, but those that do have a friend in me.

Sounds like: Home.

Lyrics:

Oh tame one
Who are you holding your words for
Oh maimed one
Who are you holding on for

A rowdy little pop/rock duo. I enjoyed their EP, Overeasy though it’s not exactly a world changing album. I look forward to their next release, which is happening pretty soon.

Sounds like: A fun little college band.

Alvvays

Everything about this band feels retro, but they’re good enough that they don’t feel tired or boring. Just a fun band to listen to.

Sounds like: A fun pop/rock band. With a bit of a dark side.

Lyrics:

Come with me and sign some papers
We can forget about the floral arrangements and bread makers

The Coathangers

These ladies mean serious business. They’re raucous, rude, and a tiny bit crazy. Sometimes that is exactly what you need.

I’d recommend Suck My Shirt and proceed carefully with the rest. Springfield Cannonball is especially catchy.

Sounds like: A very mean version of Bikini Kill.

So they're pretty good, but not exactly my thing. But all the bands I like seem to love them, so I had to give them a listen.

The band has a good sound that's kind of all over the place. If you like indie rock, you're going to find at least a few tracks you like. I'd start with their newest EP and work back as I think they've finally nailed their sound down somewhat.

“Emma O” is probably my favorite of their songs.

Sounds like: A shoegazer band, crossed with an Indie Rock band, crossed with The Cure. With an American twang.

Screaming Females

A pretty cool Alternative band with a nice sound. Their best songs (“Ripe”, “Rose Mountain”) have a dirty garage sound and pack a huge punch. The rest of their tracks are solid but lacking some energy.

Sounds like: A pretty good garage band.

Laura Stevenson

Really good singer with a great range from pure pop, to melancholy singer/songwriter. The best songs from her new album Cocksure are pop or indie rock, but interesting enough that you don’t get tired of listening.

The best of her solo songs are very subtle but reward careful listening. If you’re only paying attention to her newest work, like I did, you’re missing out on some good stuff. I had the chance to hear her perform live, and it was really excellent and would recommend to anyone.

Even better, check out her live album!

Sounds like: A lighthearted rock singer, on her newest album, and a solid singer-songwriter on her other albums.

Lyrics:

So I put it on you 'cause it's easier to do.

I watch you smoke until you know me

'til you're dizzy and you're lonely

Make the move

I am leaving it up to you
